About the Author


Professor Kefah Mokbel (born 1965) graduated from Barts and The London Medical School in 1990. After four years of basic surgical training at London teaching hospitals (the Royal Marsden, Charing Cross, and the Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals), he qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS, England) in 1994. His higher surgical training in breast and thyroid surgery was carried out in London (St. Mary’s and Barts, and The Royal London Hospitals). In 2000 he completed his accreditation and gained the certificate of completion of specialist training in general surgery with a special interest in breast and endocrine surgery. In 2000, he was also granted the Master of Surgery (MS) degree by The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine for his research in the field of molecular biology of breast cancer. In 2002, He was appointed a Professor Associate at Brunel Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics (Brunel University, London, UK) in recognition of his contribution to breast cancer research.


Following this specialist accreditation, he was appointed as a Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon to St. George’s Hospital, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery.
His main clinical interests include the early detection of breast cancer, the fast-track diagnosis of breast lumps, breast cancer surgery including breast reconstruction and sentinel node biopsy, cosmetic breast surgery including breast enlargement, breast reduction and mastopexy (breast lift), breast cancer prevention, family history, breast pain and nipple discharge.


His main research interest lies in the field of molecular biology and the clinical management of breast cancer. He has had over 100 papers published in the medical literature and has written 10 educational books. He is a member of the editorial board of several medical journals. He also has an active research and teaching programme at St. George’s Hospital and Medical School, Brunel University (The Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics) and Kingston University  (Life Sciences). He also supervises undergraduates and postgraduate research degrees.


Prof. Mokbel lectures nationally and internationally and teaches techniques of modern breast surgery, including skin-sparing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction, mammary ductoscopy and sentinel node biopsy. He is a Member of the British Association of Surgical Oncology and a Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

 

Prof. Mokbel is also the founder and chairman of Breast Cancer Hope; a UK-based charity dedicated to improving the quality and quantity of life of breast cancer patients.
